SpaceX was founded upon the notion that exploration coupled with experimentation are at the crux of human experience. I honored this sentiment as I developed a new brand identity for SpaceX.
SpaceX is doing today what maritime giants did centuries ago—leading daring expeditions to unknown places using unprecedented and bold strategies.
As an ode to exploration, I focused on a piece of antiquity known as the astrolabe. This crucial piece of navigation equipment married the sea and the cosmos. Composed of a mesh of lines and a stereographic projection, the astrolabe was used by astronomers and navigators alike to identify cosmic entities, triangulate distances, and determine local latitude. I incorporated the astrolabe into the SpaceX identity by creating simple shapes based on dates, times, and locations of SpaceX milestones. These simplified astrolabe faces can be applied across the brand via decals on rockets, badges on uniforms, or even commemorative stamps.
